Stacy Lewis, USA

Stacy Lewis is an American professional golfer whose consistency and hard work on the course have helped her to claim numerous victories on the LPGA Tour as well as reaching the World Number 1 ranking on two separate occasions.

Born in Toledo, Ohio in February 1985, Lewis started playing golf at the age of eight. Hardship soon faced the young girl as a case of severe scoliosis looked to derail her chances of not only playing golf but also walking.

From the age of 11, Lewis wore a back brace 18 hours a day, only removing it to play golf. After 6 ½ years and subsequent back surgery Lewis began playing at the University of Arkansas where she became a 4-time All-American.

She enjoyed a full and extremely successful amateur career, including being named Golf Digest’s Amateur of the Year in 2007, before turning professional the following year.

Lewis’ first professional victory came at the 2011 Kraft Nabisco Championship where she was able to hold off the then world number 1 and the major’s defending champion, Yani Tseng, ultimately claiming the title by three-strokes.

Later that year Lewis made her Solheim Cup debut at Killeen Castle in Ireland. While the U.S. Team failed to win the cup that year, Lewis made the most of the first experience and was able to end the season on a high note. Boasting 12 top-10 finishes and coming in 4th on the LPGA money list.

2012 continued to be a stellar year for the athlete with Lewis winning four events on Tour and becoming the first American player since 1994 to win the LPGA Player of the Year Award.

The following year Lewis consistency and hard work helped her land the number 1 spot in the world rankings. She was quickly usurped by Inbee Park but went on to win the Women’s British Open in August.

In 2014 Lewis won her ninth tournament with the North Texas LPGA Shootout. One month later the then 29-year-old won the ShopRite LPGA Classic for the second time in three years. After 59 weeks, Lewis regained the number 1 ranking from Inbee Park, an honour she felt more than ready to accept.

“The last time it was taken away from me in an off-week when we weren't even playing, so I'm definitely just not going to take it for granted and really enjoy it this time,” said Lewis. “Now I know all the extra things that come along with it. But I'm ready for it this time.”
