Things to Consider When Picking a High Handicap Driver:

Clubhead size
Most golf drivers come in 440cc and 460cc. A bigger clubhead offers a larger face and more importantly, a larger sweet spot. This equals more forgiveness and is perfect for players with a higher handicap.

Loft
For beginner golfers and those with slower swing speeds, you will require a higher loft. This is one of the easiest ways to achieve great trajectory off the tee and will also help your shots to stay on the target line.

Shaft
Most golf clubs offer steel or graphite shafts. The lighter graphite shafts are usually a better option for high handicappers as they help increase clubhead speed. A longer shaft can also help to increase distance, but be careful as this can also decrease accuracy.

Flex
In simple terms, this just means the amount of bend in your shaft. Swing speed and distance are the main factors in helping to determine the correct flex on your clubs. For slower swing speeds (under 250 yards) a regular, or even senior, flex is the way to go.

Adjustability
An adjustable driver allows you to tweak the loft and lie of your club. This is a great feature that benefits most golfers, especially those with a higher handicap.

MOI
A driver with a high MOI (Moment of Inertia) offers golfers more forgiveness, as the club resists twisting on off-centre hits. This can also produce more spin and a higher launch, the perfect combination for a high handicapper.

Custom Fitting
Custom fit golf clubs can benefit any level of player. For those just starting out or golfers with a higher handicap, playing with a custom fit club is guaranteed to maximise your performance. Book your custom fit appointment with GolfOnline today to help you to achieve greater distance, accuracy and consistency every time you step onto the course.

GolfInstore manager Kevin has awarded the Mavrik Max the bronze award and says, “Mavrik Max, is going to be for the golfer who wants maximum forgiveness. This is set up as more of a draw bias club, so the golfer who tends to hit a left to right ball flight. This generates more draw spin which will enable a straighter ball flight for them and this is the driver with the most forgiveness.”

The Mavrik Max is perfect for golfers looking for a long easy-to-hit driver with the ability to reduce slices off the tee. This club offers a larger head and the highest MOI of the Mavrik range, with the most draw/bias capabilities.

Pros:
The most forgiving of the Mavrik range and the easiest to launch. Looks and sounds great. Custom fit available.

Cons:
Orange colour scheme might not appeal to every golfer. Premium price point.

Verdict:
The Mavrik Max is easy to hit and is definitely the most forgiving driver in the Mavrik range. While there aren’t huge improvements from the Epic Flash series, if you’re looking for an upgrade from an older driver, or wanting a club that could help to reduce your slice, this is a serious contender.

A bigger head designed to launch the ball higher but with slightly lower spin. You have the option of changing loft and setting to a draw bias as well. This will help any golfer of any handicap.”

The SpeedZone Xtreme features a higher MOI and larger look at address, without movable weights. Boasting a slightly heavier (17g) Tungsten Exhaust weight, it is easily one of the most forgiving drivers from the 2020 lineups.

1. TaylorMade SIM Max (Gold Award)

Kevin’s top pick and gold award goes to the TaylorMade SIM Max, “From my fitting experience with customers, this has been one of the easiest clubs to us. With the twist face technology in the head this has helped with off-centre shots, and I have found that shot dispersion was closer together. It also gained golfers an extra 10-15 yards more distance.”

For those craving more forgiveness, the SIM Max offers an 8% larger face than the standard SIM, and a slightly higher launch. This gorgeous club has been specifically designed to provide faster clubhead speed for more ball speed and distance, while the rear weight creates high MOI, perfect for those with a higher handicap.

Pros:
Aesthetically beautiful driver. Ultra lightweight, forgiving and instils confidence at address. Also available in a draw-bias version. Custom fit options available.

Cons:
No sliding weight technology (as seen in the standard SIM)

Verdict:
This club is made for those golfers looking for maximum forgiveness. While it’s not the cheapest of drivers, we believe it’s £399 price point offers players great value for money in terms of design and technology.
