The Wilson DYNAPOWER Family – A Living Legend or Hyped-Up Nostalgia? You be the Judge…

For over a century Wilson Staff has been a fixture in the golf industry. Arguably one of the most successful brands of golf’s golden era, Wilson can boast a major win in every decade since the 1920s, with the last being Gary Woodland’s U.S. Open victory in 2019. While the brand might not be as popular as say Callaway or TaylorMade, Wilson has remained a firm and reliable favourite for many golfers looking for great clubs that won’t break the bank.

In 2023, Wilson is relaunching a legend the DYNAPOWER. With the help of an A.I. supercomputer, Wilson is hoping to narrow the gap between themselves and other premium brands. While the original DYNAPOWER was all about reliable and powerful irons, the latest series has been expanded to include two adjustable drivers, fairway woods and hybrids.

“Dynapower changed the game of golf seven decades ago, and it’s time for Wilson to do it again,” said Tim Clarke, President of Wilson Golf. “These powerful irons and adjustable drivers are built with our legendary history in mind as we continue to innovate and deliver top-of-the-line products that raise the confidence of golfers at all skill levels. Our technology is second to none, and we’re extremely proud of this new line of Dynapower products.”

But the big question remains – do legends really never die?

THE DYNAPOWER DRIVERS – BUILT ON LEGEND

The DYNAPOWER golf drivers have been designed in two high-performance models to suit a wide range of golfers. Featuring a sleek and modern design, both the Titanium and Carbon models look amazing. Featuring a number of different custom fit options, players are able to really dial into their performance. At £399 for the Carbon and £349 for Titanium, the DYNAPOWER drivers are considerably cheaper than the latest driver offerings from TaylorMade, Callaway or Titleist. But do they stack up in terms of performance?

CARBON

Featuring a six-way adjustable loft adaptor, the Carbon driver features composite panels on the crown and sole to help achieve lower spin and neutral ball flight tendencies. With its A.I. face design, used to find the perfect thickness across the face, you can expect faster ball speeds and maximum forgiveness.

Who’s it for: Offers lower spin (12g weight), neutral bias and mid-launch ball flight for the ultimate workability and distance. Better players apply.

TITANIUM

Specifically designed for players looking to maximise distance with straighter ball flight, the Titanium adjustable driver features a 16g rear weight that greatly increases MOI. With a low and back CG, you can expect maximum stability, higher launch angles and a neutral to draw bias. Wilson’s new 6-way adjustable hosel allows fast shaft change for fitters, as well as easy launch and spin adjustments for players.

Who’s it for: Wilson states this driver will cover about 60 percent of the market. Perfect for those looking for maximum forgiveness and higher spin.

CONSENSUS

Overall, the new DYNAPOWER drivers look, feel and sound more premium than we ever imagined was possible at this price point. But don’t just take our word for it. Legendary golf influencer Rick Shiels recently tested out both of these drivers. Check out his assessment below.

THE DYNAPOWER FAIRWAY WOODS & HYBRIDS – A.I. POWER DRIVEN

The DYNAPOWERfairway woods and hybrids feature many of the same game-changing technologies as the drivers in the range. They too have been cleverly priced to come in considerably cheaper than the latest TaylorMade or Callaway fairways. But is the performance element there?

Created using A.I. analysis to identify the optimal thickness for each section of the thin, powerful Carpenter Custom 455 face, Wilson has been able to achieve high ball speeds and maximum forgiveness across the entire face. An advanced, Tour-inspired head shape is the result of rigorous testing from some of Wilson’s Tour staffers and has produced a flatter profile for a clean set up behind the ball.

The DYNAPOWER fairway woods feature a 12g rear weight that produces a stable, high MOI club head that delivers forgiving, higher launch angles. Available in 3W, 5W and 7W, or 3H, 4H, 5H, 6H for the hybrids, GolfOnline is also offering a £15 discount per club (subject to availability) when you buy two or more Wilson DYNAPOWER Woods!

THE DYNAPOWER IRONS – THE LEGEND CONTINUES

So now let’s get into the clubs that started this thing - the DYNAPOWER Irons. The original go-to irons for golf’s greatest players in the 1950s – 1970s is back, but will it have the same impact 70 years on?

The new DYNAPOWER golf irons have been super refined to offer players the ideal game-improvement irons. Crafted using A.I. face technology to analyse thousands of combinations of variable face thickness and power holes locations, the DYNAPOWER irons are all about delivering optimal ball speed and longer distance. The brand specifically focused on the centre and toe of the clubhead, the spot where 65 percent of shots are struck by golfers with a 10+ handicap.

At address you will see a noticeable offset and a wide sole, however the topline on these irons has been made a bit thinner to also appeal to a slightly lower handicap player. The irons high MOI head design offers better forgiveness on off-centre strikes, and their low CG will fuel higher launch and better steeper angles. Available with steel or graphite shafts, these were designed to bring power and forgiveness to a whole new level.

CONSENSUS

Again, Wilson is nailing the mid-range price point. Making these an even more appealing offer to golfers looking to upgrade their irons. They look great, feel great and perform to an even better standard. But if you need more convincing, why not check out Golfshake’s review below.
